Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month
September 15 - October 15
HLHM begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries. Learn about the history and cultural of the Hispanic-Latino people by attending the VT sponsored events. Click here for the complete list of events.
American Indian Heritage Month
October 15 - November 15
Although the first "American Indian Day" was declared by the State of New York in 1916, a month long recognition of Native Americans was not achieved until 1990.This month is dedicated to recognizing the intertribal cultures, the events and lifeways, the designs and achievements of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Black History Month
February 1 - March 1
February is "Black History Month," a time to commemorate African-Americans who have changed the world. Celebrating Black History began in 1926, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard Ph.D., initiated "Negro History Week." Dr. Woodson, a historian, chose the second week in February because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Jewish Awareness Month
March 15 - April 22
Through fascinating speakers, moving presentations and a lot of laughter, Jewish Awareness Month educates and engages both Jews and non-Jews about a very complex and beautiful religion and people. Click here for the complete list of events.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
April 1- April 30
Recognized nationally in 1992, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in the US during the month of May. To provide educational and entertainment-based programs relevant to Asian and Pacific Islander culture during the regular academic calendar, Virginia Tech celebrates APAHM each year during the month of April.
